Stream monitoring is a great activity for anyone interested in the health of our streams. This is a great opportunity for students to get community service hours and have fun doing it.  Besides water testing we also have other activities: read about our events:

Recent Events

Saturday, January 17, 2009 9AM: Basic Water Quality Monitoring

We maintain a twice yearly testing schedule for basic quality  monitoring: the third Saturday in January and the third Saturday in July.  Please join us at the lower level of the Lake Forest Park Town Center mall at 9:00. We are usually done by 11:00. All are welcome!

September/October 2009: BIBI Monitoring Event

We have a yearly schedule of counting macroinvertibrates between September 15 and October 15.   We gather at a home in Lake Forest Park to review the Benthic monitoring "how to" video and then head out to two streams and do the macroinvertibrate collection. This involves wading in the streams, finding an appropriate spot, gathering cobbles from bottom of the stream, and collecting the macroinvertibrates  (small bugs) from the cobbles. The samples are then sent to a experienced technician for identification and enumeration. If you are interested in joining us, email one (or more) of the Streamkeepers contacts: See the Contact link on this page.

October 4, 2008 BIBI Monitoring Report: We had a good turnout for the Fall 2008 Benthic Inventory of Biological Integrity (BIBI) monitoring event. For more details see October 4 2008 BIBI Monitoring Report.

Jan 19, 2008 Basic Quality Monitoring Report
Ten people, including two students earning their community service credit and one Council member, went out before it rained and did the semi-annual testing. The group also discussed water-shed issues and activities in our community, and is planning an informal meeting to discuss the possibility of additional types of water quality testing in February. All are welcome!
  • To be notified about the February meeting, contact co-chairs Mark Phillips or Jim Halliday.
  • To see the data collected see the data page.

About Us
The Lake Forest Park StreamKeepers is a group of volunteers who keep an eye on stream quality and help educate on proper care to ensure continuing health and improvement to the quality of the streams within the City and McAleer/Lyon creek watershed in Lake Forest Park, Washington. We conduct regular stream testing, including chemical, fecal coliform, and biological integrity (BIBI).

Join Us:
If you would like to get involved beyond water testing, there are 5 or 6 of us, the "Steering Committee", who meet with some regularity to discuss StreamKeeper goals and plan activities. We could use your help. Email one of the contacts for more information.
